The Lost Art of Communication
In the podcast The Lost Art of Communication with Molly and Tricia, they talk about the power of communication to strengthen social connections. It appears they haven't uploaded in a while, so I chose their most recent episode on February 21st, 2022. The episode is about Understanding Highly Sensitive People with Sarah Koestner.
In the podcast, they talk about what it means to be a highly sensitive person (hsp), and mental health strategies. Many people might think that a highly sensitive person is someone with heightened feelings or someone who cries a lot. The term Highly Sensitive Person was coined by Elaine Aron, an American psychologist and author. Koestner describes people as either a dandelion, a tulip, or an orchid. This is her way of separating people into resilient, average, and sensitive. She talks about how harmful certain phrases can be for highly sensitive people, like "toughen up", or "stop being so sensitive". It's important to know what category you fall in, as it can help you know a lot more about yourself, and also navigate communication between the people around you. Being highly sensitive doesn't just have to do with emotions, it can also be sensory issues or sensory overload. A good example of this would be feeling overwhelmed in a crowded space, or the flickering of a light. Although being a highly sensitive person is not a mental health diagnosis, it can make you more susceptible to issues like anxiety disorders and depression.
Here's some more information on HSP which I found really interesting. There's also a quiz to see if you have the tendencies of an HSP, which I apparently do :)
